What does an advocate do?

The special education process can be intimidating, overwhelming, and confusing. An advocate represents the best interest of the student in the special education process. This is a professional who has extensive training and experience in the special education process, and will work to ensure the child is receiving a fair and appropriate education (as to which they are legally entitled by FAPE and IDEA). An advocate may review records such as IEPs, diagnostic reports, behavior plans, and data; provide consultation directly to parents; or participate in IEP meetings to help bridge the gap between what the child is receiving and what is most appropriate for the child to make meaningful progress. Advocates may work alongside attorneys as is necessary.

What is the cost of an advocate?

The cost of advocacy is $250/hour. A free 30-minute consultation is available to all families.
